The USS Wisconsin Battleship built for WWII and retrofitted and served in Korea. It combined speed, size and power unmatched in the fleet. What an engineering marvel. Unfortunetly built for war, but walking through it gives insight into all the coordination ( engine, steering, communication, weapons) that has to be designed and built.
The ship holds over 2 million gallons of diesel fuel. It takes 270 gallons to go 1 mile! That’s appox 20 feet to the gallon. The ship has 3 hulls. The fuel is held inside the first hull as the sailors and weapons are inside the second and third hull.

“Command and Control Center” was the first private tour
We spent 90 minutes touring the captain’s quarters, the command center, navigation, weapons control, radar system, and engine control. It is hard to fully understand the amount of coordination it took to run the ship and firing the weapons and all while being shot at.
“Engine Room” was the second private tour.
I was taken all through the engine rooms which included the steam boilers, throttle station, water cooling system and
The steam boilers get up to 8,000 degrees, the steam circulating is 2,000 degrees. The sailor in charge of the system works 4 hour shifts in 150 degree heat. If the steam pipe gets a pin hole, it could cut a man in half and cauterize him at the same time just like a Star wars light saver!

Young men would take 4 hour shifts working in 150 degree areas.
